QUESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE
Ms ROWLAND (Greenway—Attorney-General) (15:04): I thank the member for her question and her constructive engagement on this issue. As the member points out, it is indeed the genesis of why we are pursuing automated decision-making across government and an appropriate safeguards framework, and that's to ensure that Australians never suffer a repeat of the former government's illegal and harmful robodebt scheme.
That's why we've announced the development of a consistent whole-of-government framework for automated decision-making, and that will be implementing the decisions of the robodebt royal commission. This framework will regulate government's use of ADM, ensuring individuals can reap the benefits of automation without having their rights and entitlements compromised.
The ADM framework will include robust safeguards that will ensure transparency, human oversight and review rights. The design and operation of these safeguards has been and will continue to be informed by extensive consultations, including with the public, industry experts and advocacy groups. I can assure the member and the House that the government is taking a careful and methodical approach to the development of the ADM framework.
Thorough and appropriate consultation is what is necessary to ensure that reform can actually be implemented and also that we strengthen how services are delivered. In order to best co-ordinate this reform across government, a dedicated taskforce has been established within my department to deliver this important work, and I can assure the member it is working at pace.
The Albanese government's approach is focused on delivery and the future, enabling Australians to adopt new technologies responsibly, deliver higher quality services more efficiently and prevent the systemic failures identified in the robodebt royal commission. I know the honourable member will appreciate that this is a whole-of-government endeavour. It is imperative that we get this right.
It is being worked on as swiftly as possible to ensure the strongest possible safeguards. We all want to see this reform realised, and I can assure the honourable member that we are determined to make this happen. Finally, I note I will be meeting with the honourable member this week to discuss this issue, and I'm happy to engage with any other member in this place on these important matters.
