Mr MATT SMITH (Leichhardt) (13:55): 'Silly little girls.' 'You belong at home.' 'Show us your melons.' 'Hang your head in shame, eff-wit penis taker.' 'How long have you got to hold the kong for before she spits it out?' 'Get yourself a rope, you effing traitor.' 'Kill yourself before someone else does.' 'Eff you, lady.' 'People like you should be dead.' 'You'll hang.' 'Die.' It's enough.
I have collected these, and more that I cannot say, from women right across this House, from the opposition, the government and the crossbenchers. They're women who have put their hand up, who've done the work and now represent their communities. These are our colleagues and these are our friends.
My social media doesn't read like that. These comments are made by gutless cowards who weaponise gender to bully and threaten. When men allow this to happen, it allows other men to go further.
But there are good men, and it takes just one good man to call out these cyberwarriors. It takes just one good man to tell a mate that he is heading down a dark path. It takes one good man to break the intergenerational cycle of violence and trauma.
So today I ask the men of this place and the men of Australia to please stand up and be that one good man.
