STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Mr HASTIE (Canning) (13:58): There are people in my electorate living in their cars because they can't find a home. Kids are living in caravans and tents because their parents can't find a home. This is Australia.

These are people with jobs, people raising families. They're people who work hard, pay their taxes and do the right thing, and they can't find somewhere to live. This should shame this Labor government.

Labor promised to fix housing, but four years later rents are up almost 25 per cent. We aren't building enough homes. Labor is short 400,000 homes.

Builders are going broke, and young Australians have given up on the Australian dream of home ownership. Young Australians are living with their parents for longer. Young couples are delaying starting a family, because they can't get into a home.

People who have rented the same home for years live with fear that the next rental increase will force them out. Labor is responsible for this because Labor has lost control of our borders. Labor has lost control of immigration, and now they want to tax housing harder.

The coalition has a plan. We will cut immigration and tie it to the number of homes we build. We'll open up land and infrastructure.

We will cut the cost of construction, and we're going to axe Labor's toxic taxes. There used to be a simple dream in this country: work hard, save, make sacrifices, buy a home, raise your family, leave something behind for your kids. This was the Australian promise.

Prime Minister, your Labor government is killing it.
