Mr WILLCOX (Dawson) (16:15): Every superhero has an origin story. George Mann's began at 15 when he was bitten by a radioactive spider. Five years on, Dr Spider-Man is still on a mission, but his superpower isn't swinging between buildings; it's showing up.

The incredible superhero is studying medicine in Townsville and using his powers for good. He visits sick children in hospitals in both communities of Mackay and Townsville, bringing toys, laughter and something incredibly precious to a sick child—a moment where they can forget that they're in hospital and just be a kid. He raises money to buy those toys himself, because George understands something important: you don't need superpowers to make a difference.

His kindness doesn't stop at the hospital doors. Recently, Spidey turned up at Bunnings in Mackay and kids lined up the aisles just for the chance to meet their friendly neighbourhood spider-man. George says, 'With great power comes great responsibility.' He is certainly living up to that.

That's why I'm proud to see this young Dawson local recognised as one of the 15 finalists for Australia's Kindest Person—5,000 nominations with 15 finalists. Among them is one very deserving Mackay superhero. George, keep doing what you're doing.
