Ms BERRY (Whitlam) (13:51): As we mark the International Day of Democracy, it's important to reflect on the experiences of Australians participating in elections. During the 2025 federal election, I witnessed conduct at polling booths that does not belong in a free and respectful democracy. Elections should be conducted in a manner that allows every Australian to vote without intimidation, pressure or undue influence.

Of particular concern was the behaviour associated with Liberal Party campaigning at many polling booths. In my electorate, booths were aggressively overrun with Liberal Party campaign workers and materials, creating an environment that many voters found intimidating and overwhelming. I observed people with sensory issues visibly distressed by the experience, and I witnessed voters with observable cognitive impairment being told how to vote.

As a female candidate, I also experienced and witnessed inappropriate behaviour towards women. It was directed at myself and other female booth workers. Such conduct has no place in Australian public life.

While volunteers from most parties and independent campaigns conducted themselves respectfully, the behaviour that caused concern was largely associated with Liberal Party booth operations involving members of the Exclusive Brethren. Their conduct and approach was out of step with what we all expect during elections. Voting should be a positive and empowering civic experience.

It's vitally important that every Australian can participate in elections with confidence, freedom and a sense of fairness.
