STATEMENTS BY SENATORS

Senator WHITTEN (Western Australia) (13:51): The Australian newspaper has confirmed the disaster that this Labor government has brought down on any Australian looking for a roof over their head. According to the Housing Industry Association, sales of new homes have crashed by almost 20 per cent in the last three months and are eight per cent lower than the same time last year—you know, the houses that Labor's tax grab was meant to be boosting.

Labor's big tax grab in the last budget came for everyone that had an investment, no matter what it was. But on housing they came after negative gearing too, with the exception of new properties, ostensibly to increase property supply. But to get their idiotic changes through they had to recruit their favourite coalition partners, the Greens, who managed to lock out self-managed super funds from borrowing to buy new properties.

What we have ended up with are rate rises, fewer builds and rising rents and falling house prices. The people who could least afford higher costs are getting slugged. And this latest data means it's going to get worse.

New research indicates that, thanks to Labor's changes, 10,700 fewer homes will be delivered over the next decade. All this while they continue with their mass immigration obsession. Less supply and more demand—a year 8 economics student could tell you what that would do to prices.

Yet with all of their advisers, Labor can't get its head around the basics. On the other hand, One Nation has a plan to bring migration under control and relieve the pressure on housing. We will be cutting immigration by more than 750,000 people over three years, relieving pressure on Australian renters who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads.

Labor can't fix supply, and they love driving up demand. One Nation is here to fix Labor's housing disaster.
