Ms STEGGALL (Warringah) (13:36): Today's events in parliament underline the biggest threat to our way of life and our safety: global warming. Communities on the front line of extreme weather are already paying the price. The most vulnerable often have the fewest resources to prepare, recover or escape mounting disasters.

Doctors for the Environment Australia are here sounding the alarm on gas: its contribution to global warming, how it's accelerating heating and the health risks from burning it in our homes, including the rising rates of childhood asthma. Uniting Care Australia are here briefing us on the impacts of extreme weather and the impacts to vulnerable communities. Yet this government recklessly continues supporting and approving gas and fossil fuel expansion.

Today's Australian built showcase demonstrates the alternative: renewable investment and Australian technology that can cut emissions, lower bills, create jobs and build prosperity. The international context matters. Tuvalu's climate change minister is also here today, building consensus for stronger action ahead of pre-COP.

For our Pacific neighbours, climate action is a matter of survival. Whilst the Australian government makes a lot of promises and well-meaning statements, its actions do not match that. The Tuvalu climate minister, Dr Maina Talia, and Canadian senator Rosa Galvez are here advocating for consensus for change and a halt to the expansion of fossil fuels.

We need more genuine action.
