CONSTITUENCY STATEMENTS

Mr GORMAN (Perth—Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, Assistant Minister for the Public Service and Assistant Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations) (09:33): I want to talk about the local, national and global action on climate change that is happening right in the centre of the electorate of Perth. The other week, I joined students from Bayswater Primary School to plant the urban forest at Riverside Gardens.

This means that 75,000 new trees, plants and shrubs will reforest what was the Bayswater tip. I've been really pleased to work with the City of Bayswater and the local community to make sure we have a new habitat for black cockatoos and all of the birds that live in Riverside Gardens. I want to acknowledge the excellent representation that the City of Bayswater have from their local elected representatives and their federal representatives.

Further along the Derbarl Yerrigan we have the Tranby foreshore, which has been eroding for some 30 years. Our government decided to step up and do something about it. I joined the students of Maylands Peninsula Primary School to make sure that we could replant native plants in that part of the Derbarl Yerrigan and protect it for the future.

Also, at Peninsula Farm Cafe, I joined community leaders across the Perth electorate to talk about the importance of taking action on climate change. I want to thank Helen, Kira, Kerry, Lynn and Tim from Perth for the Earth. I want to thank David from Friends of Bardon Park.

I want to thank Ian and Geoff from Friends of Maylands Lakes and Rosemary from both the Baigup Wetlands Interest Group and Environment House. These are passionate people in our electorate who want to see not just a community but our nation take action, and that's exactly what we're doing in our government. Wind and solar capacity is up 60 per cent since we came to government.

We've put Australia's net zero target by 2050 into law. We've re-established the Climate Change Authority as an independent, properly resourced adviser to government. We have the $20 billion Rewiring the Nation program, investing in Western Australia, and we have serious support to help households transition to clean and affordable energy, including transition of some 100,000 social homes to keep them warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

We've made EVs more affordable and we've assisted homes across the country to get batteries, including 2,550 homes in Perth. Now, to the global. In October, Perth will host Global Citizen NOW.

From 18 to 20 October we will see conversations about making sure we can electrify our world and power our communities happen right in the heart of the Perth electorate. I thank Michael Sheldrick and Global Citizen for bringing that to Perth. Perth is at the heart of the energy transition.

There are people in my community who are passionate about acting on climate change. I look forward to standing with them in October.
