CONSTITUENCY STATEMENTS
Ms CAMPBELL (Moreton) (10:48): If you've ever wanted to know how to pitch a tent, how to start a fire or how to tie a knot, all you have to do, if you live on Brisbane's south side, is ask Brolga, Scorpion or Badger. These are the three scout names of leaders at the Clifton Hill Scouts Group—Scott McDonald, Kate Russell and Robert Speight, as they might be known in their everyday lives.
It's a scout group that's over 100 years old, with a den in Moorooka that's been there for over 60 years. I had the great pleasure of meeting with them last week, catching up with the Cubs there who'd just come back from their cuboree. It's a scout group that has over 80 participants aged five to 17 with the joeys, cubs, scouts and venturers, and 18 to 26 with the rovers.
They don't just teach life skills; they bring our community together. And they're backed by parent helpers who put in the effort by volunteering every single day of the week. Yeronga State High School celebrated and drove awareness for Queensland Mental Health Week with a youth expo on 8 October.
The popcorn was out, the bubble tea was out, and the sausage sizzle was on, but the core of the day were the support services that were available for young people at Yeronga high. They were raising awareness and having the important conversations that make a difference not just on that day but on so many days in young people's lives. A big shout out to the principal, Ben Orford, the wellbeing support officer, Lisa Williamson, and the aim to inspire young people, strengthen community connections and showcase all of those supports is not only commendable; it can be life saving.
The leather was flying through the uprights on Saturday. We were at the Yeronga Devils AFL trophy day, and the Yeronga Junior Australian Football Club is a pretty mighty club in my local electorate, and their club song, which I won't sing but I will tell you, is this: Cheers, cheers, for the old red & black, Yeronga DEVILS are on the attack. Every time we play to win, That's why we never, ever give in.
Whether the odds be great or be small, Yeronga DEVILS will win overall. Forward loyal DEVILS of Yeronga, Go onwards to victory! That song inhibits what is so important at the Yeronga Devils.
They're a resilient team that have overcome flooding. They're a team that brings the community together and helps each other out when they're in need. To Peter Oxenham, Sam Corless, Juliet Brooks and all of the parents and players, congratulations on yet another cracking season.
