Ms CLAYDON (Newcastle—Deputy Speaker) (16:01): I rise to congratulate the Newcastle Knights on an extraordinary season. While the result of the grand final wasn't what Novocastrians had hoped for, this team gave our city something truly special. They defied the odds, fought their way through the season and earned their place on the biggest stage in rugby league.

But perhaps their greatest achievement happened off the field. The Knights brought our community together. Across Newcastle, Novocastrians donned their Knights jerseys, red-and-blue flags flew from homes and businesses, cars and houses were painted in the team colours and shopfronts proudly displayed their support.

Families, friends and entire neighbourhoods came together to cheer on the team. That sense of community has been especially important in recent days, following the tragic incident at Wallsend, which left a number of people injured. My thoughts remain with those affected, their families and loved ones and everyone who witnessed the incident.

I wish all of those affected a full and speedy recovery. I also thank the paramedics, police, firefighters, hospital staff and emergency workers who responded so quickly and professionally. In difficult times, Novocastrians look after one another, and this Knights team gave our community a reason to come together to celebrate and show that spirit.

To the Newcastle Knights: thank you. You made Newcastle proud.
