Mr SMALL (Forrest—Opposition Whip) (16:12): Since Labor was elected, we've seen more than 1½ million people arrive in Australia. That's a population roughly the size of Adelaide. Under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the numbers have been too high and the standards have been too low, and it has been a disaster for our country.
I hear it all the time from the young people of the south-west. They're working hard, but they just can't seem to get ahead. Many can't get into a home of their own, let alone find a rental, and I just don't think that that's right.
Labor doesn't get it, but we need skilled migration, not mass migration. The Liberals will deliver the biggest cut to migration in our nation's history. We'll bring in people with the skills that we need who share our values and want to be part of our country.
A temporary visa should be that—temporary—because Australia is a country and not just a campground, as some are treating it. If you respect our laws, our freedoms and our democracy, you're most welcome here. If you don't, you won't be staying, under a Liberal government, and the door will be quickly shut behind you.
Labor has lost control of our migration program, and the Liberals are the only team that can fix it, with a plan that doesn't tank the economy and protects our way of life whilst restoring our economy back to the growth that we need.
