Ms KARA COOK (Bonner) (16:16): The best lessons in a trade aren't learnt from a textbook. They're learnt from someone who has spent 20 years on the tools, knows the tricks of the trade and has probably made a few mistakes along the way. That's exactly why the Albanese Labor government is investing $5 million to help experienced electricians and construction workers become qualified for TAFE and vocational teachers.
I absolutely love TAFE teachers and not just because my mum was one. Under this new program, tradies complete their Certificate IV in Training and Assessment for free. What that means is that, with mentoring and practical support, it will help our tradies of the future move from worksite to the classroom, and, in Bonner, that matters.
From the manufacturing businesses in Tingalpa and Wakerley to the industrial precincts around the Port of Brisbane, skilled tradespeople are the backbone of our local economy. They are building our homes, maintaining our infrastructure and keeping local businesses running. With major projects like the $85 million federally funded Lindum rail crossing progressing in the next few months, we know that demand for skilled workers isn't slowing down.
This builds on our government's investment in fee-free TAFE and our commitment to strengthening Australia's vocational education system. Whether it's building more homes in Bonner, upgrading our local infrastructure or powering Australia's energy future, we need the next generation ready for work and this program will do exactly that.
