STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Ms ROBERTS (Pearce) (16:26): The incorporated speech read as follows— I am thrilled to see the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre finally nearing its opening later this year. For many years, I have been a strong advocate for this much-needed facility, knowing how vital it would be for our rapidly growing northern suburbs. As the former mayor of Wanneroo, I moved a motion on notice in 2018 to bring forward the construction of the aquatic centre for the northern corridor and continued championing the project at every opportunity.

In 2020, I sought additional Commonwealth funding, and in 2022 I secured a $25 million commitment through the Australian government's Priority Community Infrastructure Program. A further $5 million was secured via the federal government's Female Facilities and Water Safety Stream. Throughout design and construction, I have continued advocating for the AARC as the federal member for Pearce.

Now, with water flowing into the 50-metre pool and finishing touches being applied, the dream is becoming reality. This $88 million centre will provide indoor and outdoor pools, a fully equipped gym, fitness studios, multipurpose sports courts, basketball courts, a creche, cafe and contemporary and accessible change rooms. The AARC represents a significant investment in our community's future, giving families greater access to swimming, recreation and fitness closer to home.

It will create new opportunities for local schools, sporting clubs, seniors and community groups to participate in activities within their own neighbourhood. I cannot wait to see residents in the Pearce community enjoying this world-class facility when it opens in late 2026.
