STATEMENTS BY MEMBERS

Ms BYRNES (Cunningham) (16:30): This speech was written by 14-year-old Alexandra in my electorate as part of the Raise Our Voice Australia campaign: Many teenagers experience bullying, anxiety, depression, and thoughts of self-harm. Tragically, some lose their lives to suicide. Since COVID-19, rates of depression and anxiety amongst young people have risen dramatically, making this an issue we can no longer ignore.

Many adults do not realise how common mental health struggles are. Last year, a close friend of mine attempted suicide, showing me that these challenges can affect anyone. There were 94 deaths by suicide among Australians 17 and under last year, with most between ages 15 and 17.

Suicide remains a leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 24, accounting for over 30 per cent of deaths. Many suicides are linked to bullying, social isolation and difficult home environments. While crisis services exist, we must focus on prevention before young people reach a breaking point.

Schools have a responsibility to support student wellbeing. Academic pressure is a major source of stress, and many students identify school as a significant factor affecting their mental health. I believe mental health education should be mandatory, with greater access to counselling services and a dedicated Mental Health Day each term.

Stronger action is also needed to reduce harmful online content. Parliament must take stronger action to support teenagers' mental health. Every young person deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy, safe and supported.
