QUESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE
Senator WATT (Queensland—Minister for the Environment and Water) (14:40): Thanks, Senator Hanson, for the question. Minister Burke and his department have been looking into this, and the government's position is that we expect all organisations that receive government funding to conduct themselves in line with guidelines and funding agreements and in accordance with the expectations of the Australian taxpayer.
If any activities breach these, the funding will be reviewed. All multicultural grants programs are administered in accordance with the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles, the Australian Government Grants Framework and the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act. Senator Hanson, what you're referring to involves allegations that a pilot involved in that recent incident on that plane may have had some connection to an Australian organisation.
The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which comprises the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and ASIO, has confirmed that it is investigating the man's links to Australia. As an investigation is underway, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to comment more broadly. What I can say, though, is there is no current threat to the community or public safety here in Australia.
We trust our agencies to do their jobs and help keep Australians safe.
