Mr VENNING (Grey) (13:39): Small businesses are the engine room of the country, and Labor is running them into the ground. Taxes are higher, power bills are higher, insurance is way up, and now we have a botched credit card ban. Labor is giving the ATO a taxpayer funded handout, while 30 businesses go bust every single day.
That tells you everything you need to know about this Prime Minister and his priorities. Australians were promised a $275 discount on their power bills. Instead, their power bills have risen by 40 per cent.
Families cannot keep the lights on because they cannot afford the bills. And this is in the state of South Australia with the highest share of wind and solar in the country. More renewables have not delivered the cheaper power that Labor has promised.
Take Whyalla. Over half a billion dollars has been written off on the failed hydrogen promise to 'reduce power bills'. Since then we've been through two administrators and hundreds of job losses.
We need cheap power, reliable power. We need to scrap net zero and end Labor's economy-killing energy experiment. There is no reason families and small businesses should pay so much for electricity in a country with the abundant energy resources that we have.
