STATEMENTS BY SENATORS
Senator WALKER (South Australia) (13:50): Today I'd like to read out to you a speech written by a young South Australian who was part of the Raise Our Voice in Parliament campaign. The speech reads: I'm Orlando, 11 years old, and I go to school in (the) Mayo electoral district. Making buses free for kids is a great idea that would benefit children, families and the community.
Many families spend a lot of money on transportation each year. If children could ride buses for free, parents would save money that could be used for important things such as food, school supplies, and clothing. Free buses would also help children get to school on time.
Some students live far from their schools or activities and may not have reliable transportation. Free bus travel would give all children equal opportunities to attend school, sports, libraries, and community events. Another benefit is that free buses could reduce traffic on the roads.
If more children use public transport, fewer parents will need to drive them. This would help reduce traffic jams and lower air pollution, making cities cleaner and healthier. In addition, children can learn responsibility and independence by using public transport safely.
They can become more confident as they learn how to travel around their community. Overall, making buses free for kids would save families money, improve access to education and activities, reduce pollution, and create stronger communities. It is a positive change that could make life better for many children and their families.
