Ms CLUTTERHAM (Sturt) (13:31): On Wednesday 7 October 2026, I attended the ACH Milpara aged-care facility at Rostrevor in my electorate of Sturt for a very, very special event. The cafe was decked out with beautiful pink flowers. The table was set with the good China and sandwiches, petite fours, fruit and cake were in abundance as a celebration took place for a wonderful lady, Margaret 'Peg' Cousins, born in 1920.
On 7 October 2026, Peg turned 106. I was absolutely blown away by her. She walked into her party using a walker but otherwise under her own steam.
She ate plenty of fruit and cake and enjoyed a few cups of tea. Peg, at 106, was beautifully dressed and presented and still totally sharp. She told me all about her time in the Australian Army, where during World War II, in her words, she ran the signalling team in Darwin, where she not only served her country with distinction but she met and married her commanding officer, her beloved Alan.
Peg's friends Jean, Margaret, Jill and Tony were there to celebrate with her. I asked Jean what Peg's secret was. How did she get to 106?
Jean said simply and with heart, 'Peg is just a good lady with a kind and beautiful spirit, and the world needs people like Peg to stay around.' I agree. Congratulations, Peg. Happy 106th birthday.
