Ms LANDRY (Capricornia—Chief Nationals Whip) (13:38): Across Australia, small businesses are being squeezed in a vice. On one side, there are high electricity bills, insurance premiums and rising operating costs; on the other, the Albanese government's taxes, charges and mounting compliance obligations. The consequences are devastating.
ASIC recorded 14,722 companies entering external administration in 2024-25, followed by another 14,153 in 2025-26. These pressures are threatening hardworking Australian businesses, and Labor's so-called tax reforms are creating further uncertainty. Changes to capital gains tax arrangements and discretionary trusts have raised concerns for family businesses relying on these structures.
The government claims most small businesses won't be affected, but, after so many broken promises, why should Australians trust another Labor assurance? Then there's the botched ATO credit card ban. After proposing to remove a vital cash flow option, the government was forced to delay implementation.
Small businesses are go-getters. They aren't asking for a handout. They want affordable energy, manageable taxes, less red tape and confidence to invest, employ and grow.
From Rockhampton to communities nationwide, these businesses are our economy's backbone. They risk their savings, livelihoods and futures simply to have a go. The coalition backs Australians prepared to take that risk.
