Mr NG (Menzies) (13:43): I rise today to deliver a speech written by Zihan, a young person from my community as part of the Raise Our Voices campaign. Zihan writes: Misinformation, hallucinations, AI slop. This is what your average Australian high school student is consuming daily.
As a 16-year-old, I see the consequences of AI abuse everywhere. My classmates struggling in maths turn to AI, receive completely wrong answers, yet trust them completely simply because they came from AI. This is unacceptable and will only plague our education system moving forward.
We are still students. But when I check the news, I constantly see companies laying off workers because of AI. As our world becomes increasingly AI-driven, one crucial skill we all need is AI literacy: the ability to understand AI, use it safely and effectively and critically evaluate its outputs.
That is why I advocate for AI literacy education to be implemented in the curriculum for all Australian high school students. I want a future where students use AI to aid their learning, not replace it. I want a future where they can safely use AI in their careers rather than fear it.
I want a future where AI is not an enemy of teachers, but a tool that works alongside them to help students build a better future. Thank you. Thank you, Zihan, for your intelligent and thoughtful contribution.
Parliament really appreciates it.
