PARLIAMENTARY REPRESENTATION

Senator McDONALD (Queensland—Deputy Leader of the Nationals in the Senate) (18:43): The opportunity to reflect on people in this place, unfortunately, usually only comes at a much more dramatic end than a valedictory night, so I want to take the opportunity to do this while you are alive and kicking. So many people have said such wonderful things, and I want to associate myself with all of those.

Like many people here, I come from a place where we really value good people and good friends, people who you can trust and who will say the truth but also be very genuine about that. You have been extraordinary. As Matt said, you're good humoured.

The way you do this job is something that I certainly aspire to but never, ever will reach. I thank you for your good humour and the way you make everybody feel appreciated and a part of this very collegiate place that we work in. Through your efforts, you have made Australia a better place and you have made Tasmania a better place.

And I want to make the comment that you've made my time here better. The only place I could be happy with you going to, rather than being here, is with your family. We're so grateful that you have shared Jonno with us for all of this time, so thank you for allowing us that.

Thank you for your friendship, thank you for your professionalism, and thank you for the work that you've done for the country and for the Senate. Thanks, Jonno.
