QUESTIONS WITHOUT NOTICE
Ms CATHERINE KING (Ballarat—Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government) (15:15): I thank the member for Werriwa for her question. I've spent a bit of time with her in Western Sydney due to the incredible infrastructure projects and construction jobs that we have underway in her part of the world. These projects, like the M12 motorway, which opened earlier this year, are all part of the Albanese government's $18 billion commitment to Western Sydney, creating jobs in that region, cutting travel times and getting people home safely.
I am so pleased to say that in just 10 days time we will reach another incredible milestone, one that will transform the way people in Western Sydney travel. Next Sunday, the Western Sydney international airport will open and the first passenger flight will take off. Whether it's to the Gold Coast, Auckland, Ho Chi Minh City or Singapore, over the coming months we will see Western Sydney international airport open to the world.
WSI has been a project decades in the making, kicking off over 15 years ago under a former Labor infrastructure minister. The entire WSI project has supported over 12,800 jobs, with around half of these jobs going to local workers in Western Sydney. And those jobs will continue, with the Nancy-Bird Walton terminal and the brand new cargo and business precincts as well.
It is a great opportunity for Western Sydney, and I look forward to seeing the many members of parliament, including those opposite, who have been invited to the opening. The government is, of course, delivering real change for Western Sydney through our infrastructure investment, new jobs, new industries and new ways to travel, and we're delivering real change right the way across the country.
Further north in New South Wales, the Coffs Harbour bypass is nearing completion. Once finished, this will mean you can travel from Melbourne to the Queensland border without hitting a single set of traffic lights—fantastic news for our freight industry. It comes off the back of the opening of the M1 at Raymond Terrace as well.
We've got the Singleton bypass, which is about to open soon, and the Newcastle inner city bypass, which is also opening soon. We've been getting on with the job of really delivering those projects, turning those press releases into actual action and actual delivery on behalf of this government. Ms CATHERINE KING: In Western Australia, we'll see the Fremantle bridge opening on 1 November—huge investment, again, by both levels of government.
In Queensland, our $7.2 billion investment in the Bruce Highway is constantly making progress, and safety improvements were recently completed in Gin Gin—all committed to under a Labor government. In Victoria, we're investing in the Melbourne Airport Rail. We're seeing that at stage 2.
Again, we've made an announcement there. And I know the member for McEwen will be pretty excited that the Watson Street interchange is about to open in his electorate, something that was languishing under those opposite.
