Portfolio — 25 May 2026

Tribune’s note

Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King used three media releases on 25 May to signal active delivery across distinct geographic and policy domains — road infrastructure in the ACT, digital connectivity for remote First Nations communities in Queensland, and major tunnelling works in South Australia.

The most consequential milestone is in South Australia, where the first of three tunnel boring machines for the $15.4 billion non-stop South Road project was blessed and named 'Mary', marking the operational start of the T2D tunnel that will run 4.5 km from Clovelly Park to Anzac Highway [TA-260525-infras-de8b9a830a24:m00AMR]. At this scale, the South Road project is among the largest transport infrastructure commitments in the current pipeline, and the naming ceremony represents a tangible construction checkpoint the government can point to publicly.

In the ACT, construction began on the William Hovell Drive duplication — a $107.25 million project that will add two lanes over 4.5 km between John Gorton Drive and Drake Brockman Drive, along with a new signalised intersection, shared path and wildlife crossings [TA-260525-infras-99313d4afb7a:m00AMR]. The project proceeds under a joint Commonwealth-territory funding model consistent with the portfolio's established delivery approach.

The third announcement — free community Wi-Fi for the First Nations communities of Mapoon, Lockhart River and Napranum in Queensland — draws on $1.6 million in Australian Government funding and $180,000 from the Queensland Government, under the broader $20 million First Nations Community Wi-Fi Program [TA-260525-infras-d45b42db9743:m00AMR]. The release explicitly links the rollout to Target 17 of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, framing the connectivity investment as a digital equity measure rather than purely an infrastructure one.

Notably, Communications Minister Anika Wells was quoted in the same release, connecting the initiative to the Communications portfolio's digital inclusion agenda — a cross-portfolio framing that positions this announcement at the intersection of infrastructure delivery and digital equity policy.

Across all three releases, the portfolio's messaging pattern is consistent: joint funding arrangements with state and territory partners underpin each project, and each announcement is anchored to a specific geographic community rather than presented as a national program. No parliamentary activity was recorded for this minister on this date.
