Portfolio — 8 June 2026

Tribune’s note

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King released 52 new tenders — 40 construction and 12 design contracts — under the $9 billion Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program, the program's most substantial procurement release to date [TA-260608-infras-7366c8263c4c:m00AMR]. The contracts cover a wide scope of physical works: more than 200 km of wide centre line treatment, 100 km of pavement strengthening, five new overtaking lanes, 13 intersection upgrades, two new rest areas, and the replacement of three narrow bridges in Far North Queensland [TA-260608-infras-7366c8263c4c:m00AMR].

The release also confirms completed safety upgrades at Bauple and flood-resilience works at Dallachy Road south of Tully, adding a disaster-resilience dimension to what is primarily framed as a road-safety program. The $9 billion program is jointly funded, with the Albanese Government contributing $7.2 billion and the Crisafulli Queensland Government contributing $1.8 billion — a Commonwealth-state cost-share that anchors the program's delivery framework.

King described the tenders as "a significant step" toward upgrades that will save lives and support regional communities and industries. The portfolio's consistent emphasis on accelerating the Bruce Highway works — spanning safety, regional economic connectivity, and flood risk reduction — reflects a broad ministerial framing that ties infrastructure investment to community outcomes across Queensland's north.
