Tribune’s note

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King announced the opening of a new heavy-vehicle driver rest area on the Bass Highway near Westbury, Tasmania, providing seating, lighting and toilet facilities for operators travelling toward Launceston [TA-260612-infras-d31aaf4816c6:m00AMR]. The facility is the first of two planned between Deloraine and Westbury; tenders for the Devonport-bound site were advertised in late May and close on 24 June 2026 [TA-260612-infras-d31aaf4816c6:m00AMR].

Both projects are funded under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, with the Australian Government contributing more than $9.6 million of the over $12 million total cost, with the Tasmanian Government covering the balance. The announcement positions the Bass Highway corridor as an active delivery site under the program, with a second procurement already in train.

No parliamentary activity was recorded for this minister on 12 June 2026.
