Tribune’s note

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King announced the opening of a new heavy-vehicle driver rest area on the Bass Highway near Westbury, Tasmania, equipped with seating, lighting and toilet facilities for Launceston-bound freight operators [TA-260612-infras-d31aaf4816c6:m00AMR]. The facility is the first of two planned along the Deloraine–Westbury corridor; tenders for the second site, serving Devonport-bound operators, were advertised in late May and close on 24 June 2026 [TA-260612-infras-d31aaf4816c6:m00AMR].

Both rest areas are jointly funded under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, with the Australian Government contributing more than $9.6 million toward a total project cost exceeding $12 million, with the Tasmanian Government covering the balance. The announcement was made jointly with Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain, reflecting the cross-portfolio character of the investment — spanning infrastructure delivery and regional development objectives simultaneously.

The portfolio's use of the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program to fund fatigue-management infrastructure on a key freight corridor signals a pattern of targeted regional road investment rather than large-scale capital works, directing federal dollars at safety and efficiency pinch-points on existing routes.
