Portfolio — 9 July 2026

Tribune’s note

A nationwide Telstra outage on 9 July dominated the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government's communications, with the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Ms Catherine King, issuing public guidance and directing regulatory accountability from the outset. Telstra restored approximately 90 per cent of affected services during the day, though intermittent faults persisted [TA-260708-infras-1b4c64d45c2e:m00AMR].

The most serious dimension of the incident concerned Triple Zero: while the emergency call system continued to operate, a limited number of callers were unable to connect to the Emergency Call Person, and that failure remained under active investigation at the time of the release [TA-260708-infras-1b4c64d45c2e:m00AMR]. The Minister directed the public to use an alternative device, a landline, or Wi-Fi calling where Triple Zero could not be reached, and explicitly warned against making test calls — guidance that signals awareness of the risk that test calls could further burden an already-stressed emergency call pathway.

On regulatory accountability, the Minister confirmed the Australian Communications and Media Authority will conduct a full investigation and that Telstra must account for the cause of the outage [TA-260708-infras-1b4c64d45c2e:m00AMR]. The portfolio's stated priorities for the immediate period are restoring full connectivity and ensuring welfare checks are conducted for any missed emergency calls — the latter a standard obligation on Telstra as Triple Zero Custodian that takes on heightened salience given the connection failures recorded during the outage.
