Portfolio — 25 July 2026

Tribune’s note

The Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government made two significant infrastructure announcements on 24 July 2026, each reflecting the portfolio's established pattern of jointly funded federal-state road investment. The headline announcement was a $181 million upgrade of a 14.9-kilometre section of the Newell Highway north of Moree, with the Australian Government committing $144.8 million and the NSW Government contributing $36.2 million [TA-260724-infras-1c614fa59477].

The project targets a stretch of one of Australia's most critical inland freight corridors, and the scope — new heavy-duty pavement, wider lanes, upgraded intersections and improved drainage — directly addresses both road safety and flood resilience on a route known for deterioration under heavy freight loads. Early works are planned to begin by mid-2027, with a construction contract to be awarded in 2028.

The second announcement confirmed a major construction milestone on the North East Link in Melbourne: tunnelling is complete, with Tunnel Boring Machine Gillian finishing the southbound bore at Bulleen [TA-260724-infras-aafa3954ca7f:m00AMR]. The 6.5-kilometre twin tunnels — co-funded by the Australian and Victorian governments and described as Victoria's largest road project — are on track to open to traffic in 2028.

The project has generated more than 12,000 jobs to date and, once operational, will divert up to 15,000 trucks daily from suburban streets, cutting travel times by up to 35 minutes [TA-260724-infras-aafa3954ca7f:m00AMR].

Taken together, the two announcements reinforce a consistent portfolio message: federal infrastructure investment is being delivered through co-funding partnerships with state governments, targeting both freight efficiency and urban mobility. The Newell Highway upgrade speaks to regional and agricultural freight; the North East Link speaks to metropolitan congestion relief.

Both projects are progressing toward 2028 delivery windows, which will give the portfolio a cluster of construction completions in that year.
