Tribune’s note

Senator Wong dominated Senate question time on 26 March with a comprehensive account of the government's response to Iran's weaponisation of the Strait of Hormuz — which she characterised as the largest shock to global energy markets in history. The government has deployed a coordinated package: releasing 20 per cent of fuel reserves, amending fuel standards, appointing a Fuel Supply Taskforce Coordinator, convening National Cabinet, and introducing legislation targeting false and misleading conduct by petrol companies.

International diplomacy secured three replacement fuel cargoes from six partner nations following six cancelled shipments, with the Prime Minister set to reconvene National Cabinet on Monday. Senator Wong also flagged that the government is actively working to map and address broader economic downstream effects beyond immediate supply disruption.
