Portfolio — 8 May 2026

Tribune’s note

Minister for Resources Madeleine King made two major announcements on 8 May 2026. From 1 July 2027, East Coast LNG exporters must reserve 20 percent of export volumes for the Australian domestic market, with existing contracts protected and industry consultation to precede implementation. Separately, new critical-minerals facilities at ANSTO's Lucas Heights — including a high-temperature chlorination unit producing high-purity quartz for semiconductors and defence, and capacity to process clay-hosted rare-earth deposits — were unveiled as part of the Critical Minerals Strategy and the Future Made in Australia agenda.

Together, the two announcements reflect a coordinated portfolio push to secure affordable domestic gas supply while building onshore processing capacity for critical minerals.
