Portfolio — 14 May 2026
Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy used the Federal Budget to announce a wide-ranging package targeting remote community disadvantage across housing, employment, food security and fuel supply. The centrepiece measures include a $4 billion Remote Housing Plan with equal Commonwealth–Northern Territory co-investment, a doubling of the First Nations jobs target to 6,000 by 2030, and a 50 per cent price subsidy on 30 essential food items across 117 remote stores with expansion planned.
The portfolio's Budget framing integrates multiple policy levers — housing, health, employment and food access — into a single Indigenous affairs push directed at remote communities.
