Communications Minister Anika Wells led on the consumer protection case, citing the millions of dollars SMS scams cost Australians each year. The cross-portfolio nature of the release is itself a signal: Communications and Financial Services are presenting a unified front on scam prevention, with the register serving as an operational delivery point for obligations already legislated under the Scams Prevention Framework.
