Portfolio — 1 June 2026
The Albanese Government's most concrete near-term commitment on scam prevention landed on 1 June: an SMS Sender ID Register, administered by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, will go live within one month [TA-260601-infras-334438e2bd8f:m132880]. From 1 July, any text message sent from an unregistered sender ID will carry an 'Unverified' label, giving recipients an immediate visual warning [TA-260601-infras-334438e2bd8f:m132880].
The register targets a well-documented attack vector — scammers impersonating the Australian Tax Office, Australia Post, banks and retailers — and more than 12,000 sender IDs are already enrolled ahead of the launch date. Businesses that have not yet registered are urged to contact their SMS providers to prepare.
The announcement was jointly framed across two portfolios. Communications Minister Anika Wells led on the consumer protection case, citing the millions of dollars SMS scams cost Australians each year. Assistant Treasurer and Financial Services Minister Daniel Mulino cast the register within the government's broader anti-scam architecture, describing it as part of a world-leading, ecosystem-based approach to prevent, detect, disrupt and respond to scams [TA-260601-infras-334438e2bd8f:m132880].
That framing positions the register not as a stand-alone tool but as one layer of a multi-sector scam prevention ecosystem that combines the new register with existing anti-scam legislation — the Scams Prevention Framework — covering banking, telecommunications and key digital platforms.
The cross-portfolio nature of the release is itself a signal: Communications and Financial Services are presenting a unified front on scam prevention, with the register serving as an operational delivery point for obligations already legislated under the Scams Prevention Framework. Policy staff should note that the 1 July commencement date creates a hard implementation deadline for industry, and the 'Unverified' labelling mechanism will be the first publicly visible output of that framework for most consumers.
