Tribune’s note

The Minister for the Environment and Water opened public consultation on the next stage of Australia's national environmental reforms, anchored by the establishment of a new National Environmental Protection Agency on 1 July 2026. A new Environmental Offsets Standard introduces a hierarchy requiring proponents to avoid and mitigate harm before offsetting can be considered — a first under Australian law.

National Environmental Standards are scheduled from mid-2026, with remaining reforms to be in place by 1 December 2026.
