Tribune’s note

Minister Keogh announced the appointment of Penny McKay as the inaugural Commissioner of the Defence and Veterans' Service Commission, effective 1 June 2026, fulfilling a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. The DVSC is structurally independent of government, holds extensive evidence-gathering powers, and is mandated to drive systemic reform and hold the Government accountable on Royal Commission recommendations.

The Government committed $44.5 million over four years to establish and operate the body, with $10 million allocated in the first year.
