Portfolio — 11 May 2026
Tribune’s note
Minister Keogh used the 2026–27 Budget to announce what the portfolio calls the largest peacetime increase in Australian defence spending — an additional $14 billion over four years and $53 billion over the decade, bringing total defence funding to $887 billion through 2035–36. The portfolio frames the investment around three pillars: capability acceleration for an integrated, focused force (including the nuclear-powered submarine programme and Henderson Defence Precinct), structural reform through a new Defence Delivery Agency from July 2027, and veteran welfare through $770 million to implement Royal Commission recommendations.
