Minister for Communications Anika Wells had a split day on 12 May 2026: a portfolio announcement appointing Jane Palfreyman as SBS Managing Director for five years, and a Question Time defence of her travel record following an IPEA audit. On the SBS appointment, Wells framed Palfreyman's commercial broadcast background as the right fit to sustain multicultural and multilingual public broadcasting.
In the House, Wells pointed to a voluntary IPEA audit covering nearly 2,000 line items across 243 trips — which found her travel fully compliant — and directed further questions to the publicly available 256-page report.
