Tribune’s note

Minister Wells passed the Telecommunications Amendment (Enhancing Consumer Safeguards) Bill through the House on 14 May 2026, its most significant measures being a 40-fold increase in the maximum civil penalty for telco breaches (from $250,000 to $10 million), new ACMA enforcement tools, mandatory outage notification to customers and regulators, and tighter oversight of the triple-zero service.

The bill passed third reading on the same day, completing its House stage. During Question Time, Wells faced a question about a ministerial trip, responding that she had reported to IPEA on two prior occasions and that the full report is publicly available online.
