Senator Matt O'Sullivan used a one-minute Senate statement on 30 June to announce the coalition's support for motion No. 538, which seeks production of documents relating to the $4.32 billion aerial surveillance contract [TA-260630-senate-9296234ccee4:s061]. O'Sullivan, speaking as Deputy Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate, framed the coalition's position around procurement integrity: he argued that Australians deserve confidence the contract was awarded properly and that the scale of the spend warrants public scrutiny [TA-260630-senate-9296234ccee4:s061].

He acknowledged the government's standard practice of resisting orders for production of documents touching on border and national security sensitivities, but countered that the contract has already been examined through Senate estimates — undermining the case for further withholding. O'Sullivan also welcomed One Nation's decision to back the motion, characterising it as following the coalition's lead on transparency.

The opposition's strategic positioning here is to hold the government to account on high-value defence procurement through the Senate's document production mechanism, building a cross-bench coalition to apply pressure where executive resistance to scrutiny would otherwise prevail.
