Shadow Portfolio — 14 May 2026

Tribune’s note

Senator Kovacic used two Senate appearances on 14 May 2026 to prosecute distinct but thematically linked opposition lines. On the ASIO Amendment Bill, the coalition offered qualified support — backing expanded compulsory questioning powers and permanence, while insisting on a three-year sunset clause the government has agreed to restore, framing the coalition as guarantors of parliamentary oversight on national security.

In question time, Kovacic shifted to housing and tax, targeting the government's record on home-building delivery, the Reserve Bank's warning that the five-percent deposit guarantee will push entry-level prices higher, and a direct credibility attack on the Prime Minister over pre-election commitments on negative gearing and capital gains tax discounts. Across both arenas, Kovacic positioned the coalition as the party of institutional safeguards — whether over coercive intelligence powers or over housing wealth — against a government she characterised as failing young Australians.
