Shadow Portfolio — 14 May 2026

Tribune’s note

Opposition Chief Whip Cameron Caldwell used a House debate on 14 May 2026 to mount a broad budget attack centred on taxation and housing, arguing the Albanese government is the highest-taxing administration in Australian history. His core claim links new budget taxes directly to reduced home construction, citing page 158 of the budget papers, and frames the housing crisis as inseparable from what he describes as unchecked migration of 1.4 million arrivals under Labor.

Caldwell also accused the government of breaking promises by ruling out changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing.
