Tribune’s note
On the eve of the 2026-27 budget, Assistant Minister Patrick Gorman used both a DEWR media interview and a PM&C media release to position the government's fiscal statement as a "budget of reform" targeting intergenerational fairness, housing supply, and economic resilience. The budget's headline housing measure is a Treasury-backed $2 billion investment to help local governments bring more land online.
Gorman also flagged forthcoming changes to negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount — the most politically significant policy signal of the day — alongside free TAFE, Medicare Urgent Care clinics, and further tax cuts for families.
