Tribune’s note

Assistant Minister Julian Hill moved two customs tariff proposals in the House on 14 May 2026, delivering a substantive tariff reform package. The first eliminates the 5% general customs duty across approximately 500 tariff classifications, effective 1 July 2026. The second extends duty-free treatment for Ukraine-originating goods through to 3 July 2028.

Both measures carry dual policy weight: domestic cost-of-living relief and fulfilment of Australia's RCEP obligations, alongside a continuing foreign policy commitment to Ukraine.
