Minister Bowen used 12 March to anchor a two-track fuel security response to the Middle East supply crisis: immediate relief through a 60-day Fuel Quality Standards Act amendment redirecting 100 million litres per month of Ampol export-grade fuel into domestic supply and release of up to 762 million litres from Minimum Stockholding Obligation reserves, alongside Australia's endorsement of the IEA's largest-ever coordinated action.
In Question Time, the Minister reported current stock positions — 36 days petrol, 32 days diesel, 29 days jet fuel — and acknowledged demand had doubled, creating acute shortages in regional and rural areas despite supply arriving on schedule. Both streams carried an identical structural argument: near-term supply measures are temporary while accelerated renewable energy deployment, grid interoperability standards and household electrification pilots constitute the permanent resilience answer.
The Clean Energy Regulator's elevation to National Technical Regulator for consumer energy resources, and the Electrify 2515 pilot expansion into Bulli, were advanced as that longer-term architecture.
