Tribune’s note

Minister Bowen announced the creation of a Federal Government-owned strategic fuel reserve — the first domestic reserve of its kind among IEA members — alongside changes to the minimum stockholding obligation. Australia currently holds 42 days of petrol, 35 days of diesel (the second-highest diesel stock since the 2023 obligation began), and 29 days of jet fuel, with 55 ships en route and 4.5 billion litres contracted for delivery over the next four weeks.

Bowen explicitly ruled out a significant petrol price impact, stating the government will work with industry on the required storage infrastructure.
