Tribune’s note

Minister for Education Jason Clare announced a three-party agreement to build a new early childhood education and care centre in the Huon Valley, drawing on the Albanese Government's $1 billion Building Early Education Fund [TA-260410-educat-a434902ca28c]. The funding structure divides the investment across three levels of government: the Australian Government contributes $5 million, matched dollar-for-dollar by the Rockliff Government, with the Huon Valley Council providing the balance and taking responsibility for delivering and running the service [TA-260410-educat-a434902ca28c].

The facility will be built on Department for Education, Children and Young People land adjacent to Huonville Primary School, providing up to 130 long day care places and 70 outside school hours care places — a combined capacity of up to 200 children [TA-260410-educat-a434902ca28c]. Construction is slated to begin in January 2027 and complete in March 2028.

The co-location with Huonville Primary School is the defining design choice in this announcement. The media release frames proximity to an existing school as improving convenience for families and supporting children's transition into kindergarten — a messaging pattern consistent with the portfolio's broader equity argument that access to quality early learning should not depend on postcode.

The choice of the Huon Valley, a regional Tasmanian community, reinforces that geographic equity framing directly.
