Portfolio — 12 March 2026

Tribune’s note

Senator Katy Gallagher's 12 March Senate activity fell across two distinct registers: procedural control and substantive policy defence. As Manager of Government Business, she advanced five motions — most notably blocking committee referral of the Migration Amendment (2026 Measures No. 1) Bill 2026 and setting binding time allocations for two bills — while tabling four government responses to committee reports spanning competition law, international gender equality, migration removal powers, and telecommunications surveillance.

In Question Time, Gallagher defended the government's inflation record by attributing recent price pressure to Middle East conflict-driven oil price rises from approximately $60 to over $120 per barrel, and cited $114 billion in identified savings as the foundation of the government's budget repair approach. A separate exchange on deductible gift recipient status for an LGBTIQ+ advocacy organisation produced the day's sharpest political exchange, with the Minister rejecting opposition characterisations and criticising what she described as culture-war framing.
