Tribune’s note

The Minister for Skills and TAFE, Mr Brooks, used a ministerial media release on 9 July to mark the first-year milestone of the free Apprentice Helpdesk, reporting it has assisted nearly 3,500 apprentices and trainees since its June 2025 launch [TA-260709-vicmed-cc203dcd9823]. The Helpdesk is run by Apprenticeships Victoria and staffed by Case Support Officers who cover entitlements, training contracts, mental health, workplace rights, job searches, in-training assistance and financial incentives — serving not only apprentices but also their parents, employers and job seekers.

Mr Brooks stated directly: "In just one year, the Apprentice Helpdesk has supported nearly 3,500 Victorians to get qualified and stay safe in the workplace" [TA-260709-vicmed-cc203dcd9823]. The budget context underpinning this milestone is the Victorian Budget 2026/27 allocation of $5.8 million to expand the apprenticeships pipeline, aimed at increasing training completion rates and workforce entry [TA-260709-vicmed-cc203dcd9823].

The minister's framing positions apprentices as essential to construction, building and renewable energy sectors — areas facing acute skills demand — with the Helpdesk's counselling, in-person assistance and financial incentives cast as retention mechanisms that translate enrolments into completions. The communications approach here is consolidation: the one-year milestone provides a credible vehicle for reaffirming a budget commitment and advertising the service's reach to employers and families who may not yet know it exists.
