Portfolio — 10 July 2026

Tribune’s note

The Minister for Communications and Sport, the Hon. Anika Wells, issued a public update on 9 July on a Triple Zero network incident involving Telstra, disclosing both the scale of the welfare-check operation and the resolution of the underlying connectivity fault [TA-260709-infras-bd8e2d03fdd6]. Telstra has deployed an interim technical fix that resolves the connectivity errors that were generating false or failed triple zero call records, and the carrier will no longer commission further welfare checks arising from those network errors [TA-260709-infras-fed715b1106a].

Of the 170 welfare checks referred to state and territory emergency services, 44 have been cleared with no adverse outcomes reported. The Triple Zero Custodian — the statutory body responsible for overseeing the emergency call service — advised the Minister that the majority of the remaining checks referred to emergency services have now been completed with no adverse outcomes, leaving 13 checks still outstanding [TA-260709-infras-bd8e2d03fdd6].

The Minister's releases do not specify the nature or duration of the network fault, nor do they indicate whether a formal regulatory inquiry or incident review has been initiated, which represents a gap in the public record at this stage. The portfolio's stated approach is to maintain continuity of triple zero services through coordinated monitoring with both emergency services and telecommunications providers, using welfare-check data to guide any further action required [TA-260709-infras-fed715b1106a].

The two media releases together signal that the immediate safety risk has been substantially resolved while a small cohort of welfare checks remains under active management.
